Starting Yesterday, Facebook Required all Facebook Page is using SSL certificate to make sure that their user privacy is protected.
Its great news since there are quite a lot of FB user ID is stolen or hacked daily. What is SSL anyway? Quoted from webopedia.com :
Short for Secure Sockets Layer, a protocol developed by Netscape for transmitting private documents via the Internet. SSL uses a cryptographic system that uses two keys to encrypt data − a public key known to everyone and a private or secret key known only to the recipient of the message. Both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer support SSL, and many Web sites use the protocol to obtain confidential user information, such as credit card numbers. By convention, URLs that require an SSL connection start with https: instead of http
Basically it’s a security certificate. a way to encrypt digital information. Having an SSL certificate means that the website protect user’s private information. For example Banks websites, have SSL so your account detail and credit card numbers are protected.
Facebook making this SSL Certificate is required it's because although their site is protected but the application or page you visited is susceptible from spying activities. Another way to make sure their user privacy security.
There's slight changes from this new rules even if you are just a user. When you want to play or open some fans page you'll be asked if you want to change to non secure connection where it's not using SSL Certificate. But If you are the Business Owner and have one or several fans page its time to buy some SSL certificate and start update your link since if you're using SSL your link will become https. And also check your script cause some script is need to be modified so it to work properly in SSL Connection.
Some Hosting Provider usually also sell this SSL Certificate, or just search SSL Certificate provider, usually their price more cheaper.
By the way, from my point of view this SSL-required is great step from Facebook to make sure their user privacy is not compromised and to prevent their user moving to another Social Network site. hopefully the feature is worked as planned.
